The house you are about to see was designed by English Architect Barrie Briscoe. He trained in the USA and has 30 years experience in the USA, Canada and Europe making unusual, high quality buildings of all kinds using modern technology and traditional craftsmanship.
The Pole House system is a construction method based on a grid of tree trunks set onto the ground and connected together with a timber framework. Any type of roof, exterior walls, size and style can be made in this way.
This Pole House is a collaboration between Barrie Briscoe and master craftsman Mike White, whose workshops and team of skilled artisans are based in Cornwall. The house took about three months on site to finish is 140 sq mtrs in area and cost £550 per square metre.
It is one of many possible variations on Pole Houses which are:
- Quick to construct:
-
the main timbers are prefabricated and then erected on site.
- Adaptable:
-
to difficult site conditions and useful for many purposes: private houses, workshops, studios, offices, hotels, restaurants and shops.
- Sympathetic to the environment:
-
using sustainable materials, recycled insulation, low energy in manufacture and use.
- Easy to modify:
-
with large, flexible spaces inside.
- Test by time:
-
in Japan, Scandinavia and Norway, pole houses are still in use after 1,500 years.
Pole houses can be pre-fabricated and shipped anywhere
